Week 25!

I hope everyone enjoyed their February vacation.  As you might have heard, I certainly enjoyed mine! This first week back to school was jam packed with new units and learning.  Here's a look at what we did:

*Math:  We began unit 6 which focuses on multiplying and dividing decimals as well as line plots.  This week, we focused on multiplying and dividing decimals by powers of 10 as well as in the metric system.  On Thursday, we got together with 5D and played six different math games to practice our skills.

*Reading:  We began a new unit about argument and advocacy in reading.  This week, learned how to suspend our own judgement about a topic and to instead consider an argument from both sides.  We also studied various articles to infer what the claim being made was, as well as the supporting details and evidence.  Students were also assigned a topic and in small teams and began researching evidence for both sides.  They then had to participate in flash debates about their topic!

*Writing:  We began a new unit centered around argument based writing which ties in perfectly with our new reading unit.  Students will be researching a controversial issue and will be writing research reports/participating in small debates.

*Social Studies: We began our new unit on the Revolutionary War.  Throughout the unit, students in 5D and 5H will be working to uncover the many stories of the war and will be pushed to think about each event from multiple perspectives.

*MixBooks: These have been ordered and should hopefully arrive within a week or so.

Enjoy the weekend,
Ms. Hodgdon
