Week 18

Welcome Back!  I hope you and your families enjoyed the holiday season.  It's hard to believe that 2016 is already here.  Here's a peek at some of the learning we did this week:

Math:  We began unit 4 which covers decimal concepts as well as coordinate grids.  Topics your child will learn include decimal place value, comparing/ordering decimals, rounding decimals, graphing on a coordinate grid, and adding/subtracting decimals.

Writing:  We continued to work on our informational writing.  We looked at our writing with a partner and determined areas that were our strengths as well as areas that we could grow.  Students will be crafting a final draft beginning next week, which will consist of several non fiction text features.

Reading:  Students were introduced to current events and began exploring kid friendly news articles online.  Each week, your child will select a current event, do a close reading of it, and then complete different activities to challenge and grow their thinking.  These will be kept in a notebook and will come home with your child at the end of the year.

Science: Before vacation, students presented their working models of the heart.  We had 5 doctors as guest judges, as well as Mr. Goldsmith, Mr. Fosher and Mrs. Wentworth.  I was so impressed with the creativity, teamwork and knowledge that was demonstrated.

Social Studies:  We wrapped up our unit on colonization.  Students worked all week at crafting a commercial that would entice colonists to move to their specific colony.  Videos will be presented to 5D and 5H on Monday.  Check them out!

FYI: 5H and 5D will be going on our Freedom Trail field trip on Tuesday, May 24th.  Parents are welcome to attend, but a lottery system will be used to determine who can ride on the bus. Typically, only 2 parents per classroom are chosen at random.  If you are not chosen to ride on the bus, no worries!  You are welcome to drive down to Boston and meet us there :)

Enjoy your weekend.
