*Imagination Vacations: We typically have a brain break during our long morning stretch every day. This week, I introduced imagination vacations to your children. These provide opportunities for students to close their eyes, relax, regain focus and to practice mindfulness. This week we did A Special Place as well as Bright Star. Ask your child about it!
*Geography Bee: A huge congratulations to Ainsley for taking first place in the geography bee and for representing SMS!
*Literacy: We continued working on our second research reports. Students spent two days writing a flash draft using all of the information and facts they had collected. We then looked at various formats and structures that non-fiction books have, and used those as a mentor to try some out with our own writing! Students worked on creating quizzes, fun fact bubbles, timelines, graphs etc.
*Math: We learned how to graph ordered pairs on a coordinate plane. Students then worked on two projects, both centered around graphing. They created towns using graph papers, plotted points and created a set of questions to accompany their town. Students also worked on a Valentine's mystery picture, where they had to plot a large set of ordered pairs to reveal a mystery picture.
*Science: We continued working on matter with 5D. On Tuesday and Wednesday we created a substance called oobleck, which was quite the hit (although seriously messy). We then learned to use gram scales to measure different types of matter, find the average/median of our data, as well as to make estimates. On Friday, we began learning about density.
