Mrs. Loh's Class: Week 9!

Thank you to all the parents who met with me this week during parent-teacher conferences. It was wonderful to see you all and I look forward to meeting with the rest of you next week! Here's a snapshot of the learning that happened in 5L this week:

*Math: we began unit 3 which focuses on multiplying and dividing whole numbers and decimals. Students worked on estimating products of whole numbers and decimals as well as 2x2 and 3x2 multiplication. As I mentioned last week, here are some extra practice opportunities for your child if you would like them:

Decimal Worksheets

*Writing: We wrapped up our first narrative and students are currently working on raising the level of writing for their final narrative piece. This week we focused on lessons we could learn from mentor authors, by studying various stories and noticing techniques that publish authors use. We also asked ourselves, "so what?" about our stories, really pushing to have a powerful heart or meaning to the small moments that were chosen.

*Reading: Students began their new book club books! This week we also focused on making connections between the two books they have read in book clubs, particularly in the areas of character problems, relationships, setting and theme.

*Social Studies: Students have finished visiting each world for our three worlds meet unit! They are currently writing raps using Flocabulary, which will be presented in small groups to help demonstrate what they learned.

*Classroom Economy: 5L has launched its classroom economy, which will be a yearlong occurrence. Students will learn how to write checks, how to balance credits and debts from their class bank account, will be paid bi-weekly for their classroom job and will have opportunities once a month to cash in their savings for something from the class store. Throughout the year, I will be teaching lessons that coincide with economics, such as salaries, taxes, price inflation, supply and demand as well as currency. This week, students designed our classroom "currency" as well as discussed the differences between checks and balances.

*Holy Pumpkin Day with 2H: We spent some time Friday morning with our reading buddies helping them to celebrate Holy Pumpkin Day! Students counted pumpkin seeds, measured pumpkins and much, much more!
