Week 8!

Here's a look into our week:

*Math: We learned how to multiply and divide by powers of 10, exponents/base numbers, expanded, standard and number form, as well as traditional multi-digit multiplication.

*Reading: We focused on problems faced by the characters in our books and began brainstorming possible themes.  We also discussed how book groups can provide us with opportunities to see things differently as well as gain new thoughts and ideas.  They are not only an opportunity to share, but also to learn!

*Writing:  We revised our personal narratives by thinking of the theme or lesson we wanted our readers to learn.  We also worked hard at revising our leads so that we hook readers in!  Ask your child which type of lead they chose to try out...snapshot, action, onomatopoeia, emotional or question.

*Social Studies:  wrapped up our first unit and introduced our culminating project!  Students got to choose whether to partake in a debate about the Columbian Exchange/Columbus Day or to create a project using a digital video trailer, iMovie, a podcast etc.  Ask your child which project they chose!

*Reading Buddies:  We had a flashlight read with 2H, which meant we got to read spooky Halloween books in the dark with a flashlight!

*Mystery Skype:  We had our fourth Mystery Skype this week!  It was the first time that the mystery location was outside of the USA.  5H guessed their location in 8 questions which was VERY impressive.  We ended up discovering that the class we were skyping with was from Buenos Aires, Argentina!

*Author Skype:  On Tuesday, the entire 5th grade gathered together to skype with published author Kate Messner.  She talked about the writing process and showed examples of the work she has done.  It was an amazing opportunity for students to see that real, published authors go through the same experiences and emotions while writing that they do!

Have a wonderful weekend!
