It was a short week this week, but 5H sure did pack a lot in! Here's a look into some of the learning we did:
*Math: We completed THE CANDY RUSH activity with 5D! Students received different candy amounts and had to determine the worth of their stash. All together, 5H and 5D had over $4 million dollars worth of candy! We also began learning about place value relationships and powers of 10. Ask your child about using QR scanner codes to self asses I-Can Place Value!
*Reading: We launched our first book groups! Students got to preview 9 different books and choose their top three interests. From there, I placed them in small reading groups. We started analyzing the problems that our characters face so that next week we can begin determining possible themes of our books. Ask your child which group they are in!
*Reading Buddies: In honor of Columbus Day, we participated in a boat making challenge! With our reading buddies, we were given 5 minutes to create a boat out of tin foil. The challenge? To see which pair's boat would hold the most pennies without sinking. Some boats held over 100!
*Writing: We continued working on our personal narratives and will begin the editing, redrafting and publishing phase this week. On Tuesday, we will be having an author Skype with Kate Messner, where we will see just how similar a professional author's writing process is compared to the writing we do in the classroom!
*Social Studies: We learned about perspective and how different people can experience the same event in different ways. To really understand this, we studied a news article about a pop up store in Pennsylvania. Mrs. Delello and I were truly impressed with the depth of conversation and reflection while doing this activity. Ask your child what the article was about!
We also went outside on Friday to experience the emotions that early explorers felt as they left their homes and began traveling. Students were paired up and one partner was blindfolded. The other walked their partner around, stopping at two landmarks along the way. When finished, the blindfolded person had to recreate a map of the journey they had just taken. It was a fantastic way to simulate the feelings that explorers felt when trying to recreate a map of the journey they had taken!
*Global Read Aloud: We Skyped with a 5th grade classroom from Connecticut to discuss our thoughts and questions about Fish in a Tree. They were so impressed with our questions and responses that their teacher sent me an email saying how thoughtful 5H was!
Enjoy!
