Week 6!

It's hard to believe another week has come and gone.  Here's some of the learning 5H did!

*Math: Finished Unit 1 and took our test on Friday.  Next week we will begin Unit 2 which focuses on place value, multiplication of multi digit numbers, division as well as powers of 10/exponents.

*Reading: This week we focused on thinking analytically about our text.  We used evidence from the books we have been reading to support our thinking.  Next week we will begin book groups and will be focusing on analyzing theme!

*Writing:  We finished our first "bend" in our personal narrative unit.  With their writing partners, students assessed their writing using a checklist and then made edits to strengthen their work.  This week, we will begin the editing, revising and publishing phase of our work.

*Social Studies: We finished taking notes on the Americas, Europe and Africa using the 5 themes of geography.  After collecting all of our information, we compared and contrasted the three worlds by creating a digital three way venn diagram.  These are published on our classroom blog!  We also began to talk about identity and the varying ways individuals living in the three worlds identified themselves.  Next week, we will begin to explore perspective as we begin learning about the three worlds meeting.

*Global Read Aloud:  We began our read aloud book, Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt.  This book is being read by over 9,000 different classrooms around the world.  Check out this map that shows all the varying locations!

After reading the first few chapters, we Skyped with a fifth grade classroom from Ivy Hill Elementary School in Arlington Heights, Illinois.  During our Skype, we asked questions about Fish in a Tree as well as answered questions.  We had an AMAZING discussion about character choices, predictions, questions, wonderings and theme.  I was truly impressed by the level of questions students in 5H asked as well as their thoughtful responses.

*Mystery Skype: We had our SECOND Mystery Skype on Friday.  5H guessed the location of the other class in four questions!  It is a new record and they should be so proud of themselves.  The class we connected with lived in Georgia.  After we each figured out the location of the other class, we had an opportunity to ask questions to learn about Georgia.

*Blogging:  This week for Global Read Aloud, we also connected with other classrooms around the world via our 5H blog.  We wrote a blog post from the perspective of one of the characters from Fish in a Tree.  I have to say, I was blown away by the posts that 5H created.  They truly captured the thinking and essence of each character they chose to portray.  Here's a few examples of blog posts:

Enjoy the long weekend!
