Week 2!

This week, 5L really began diving into math and literacy workshop expectations.  We had a jam packed four day week and I was so impressed again with the excitement and enthusiasm that your children have for learning.  Check out some of our highlights:

*Math

  • we discussed math workshop expectations (speaking, listening, thinking and behavior)
  • we learned about order of operations
  • we watched a PEMDAS rap to help us remember the steps to order of operations
  • we created a figure me out poster using what we had learned about order of operations
Ask your child: What is the order of operations?  What happens when someone in class says waterfall, waterfall during math workshop? What facts did you include on your figure me out poster?

*Literacy:
  • we brainstormed strategies we can use to help us become better readers
  • we practiced a specific strategy and reflected on how it was helping us
  • we discussed workshop expectations
Ask your child: What is your class reading for read aloud?

*Social Hour with 5D:
  • we discussed social media and how people portray themselves online
  • we began discussing digital citizenship
  • students practiced what we had talked about through Google's new digital citizenship program called Be Internet Awesome
*STEM:
  • in pairs, students created an army man launcher using limited supplies
  • pairs them competed against the entire fifth grade to determine a winner

*Job Applications:
  • Students applied for jobs using a new web based program
  • Their job application videos will be uploaded to SeeSaw for you to see
*Reading Buddies:
  • We met with our 2H reading buddies for the first time!

Reminder:
*Curriculum Night: Thursday at 6:30
