*Math: We began unit 5, which focuses again on adding/subtracting fractions/mixed numbers with unlike denominators as well as multiplying and dividing fractions. This week, we revisited finding a common denominator, equivalent fractions as well as subtracting fractions with regrouping.
*Literacy: We are wrapping up our informational unit and students have been working hard at creating their MixBooks. These are similar to a Shutterfly photo book, except they can add more text features/page layouts to create a finished product that mimics a real non fiction book. These will be available for free online in the form of a link, but may also be purchased to be printed. With my discount code, the books would be around $6 each. I'll send home more information about that next week.
We have also continued to work on current events, and students have been using different methods/ways to demonstrate critical thinking about their topic. Ask your child what their current even was this past week!
*Science: On Monday, groups got to test out their self created science experiment. Mrs. Delello and myself were very impressed with the different experiments we saw. Groups took notes/data during the experiment and then created and typed a lab report to conclude the activity.
We then switched gears for the rest of the week to focus on a mini unit centered around design engineering. I was fortunate enough to be chosen by the James Dyson Foundation to be donated an ideas box for my classroom. For the next three weeks, 5H and 5D will be learning/experiencing what it means to be a design engineer. This week we focused on the following
*misconceptions about design engineers
*what design engineers do/who they are
*how to use a PMI method to investigate real world products
Students then got into groups of 4 and will be working over the next two weeks to design a new prototype for an existing product that could be more functional/better . For example, some groups are recreating a desk, a trash can or a ruler. On Thursday and Friday, February 18th &19th, students will participate in a Shark Tank simulation and will present their design/prototype to a panel of "sharks". You are more than welcome to come and watch! I will let you know the time once Mrs. Delello and myself can secure the stage.

*Valentine's Celebration: On Friday, February 12th we will have a small class celebration after lunch. Students are welcome and encouraged to bring in Valentine's for their classmates. I will send a list home on Monday with student names. If possible, I would love some snack donations for our party. We do have another ice cream party as a class reward and I was thinking this afternoon would be perfect. If you could donate any icecream/toppings that would be greatly appreciated. Healthy snacks are always encouraged as well!
Enjoy the long weekend!
Ms. Hodgdon
