Week 21

Hooray for our first snow day!  Despite a shorter week, we sure accomplished a lot in 5L!  Check out some of our highlights below...

*Math:

• Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators
• Adding and subtracting mixed numbers/subtracting with regrouping
• Began a BAKERY project where students will host a cooking show next week
• Played trashketball

*Literacy:

• Worked with Mrs. Loh and Mrs. O to edit/revise our research reports
• Learned about an amazing tool we will be using to publish our work (MixBook!)
• Practiced new spelling words

*Social Studies:

• Debated about the possible theories of what happened to Roanoke
• Began our final project...creating an infomercial enticing colonists to move to a specific colony!

*STEMBASSDORS:

On Friday, students from UNH came into our classroom and participated in a STEM challenge with us.  Students were asked to design and build a roller coaster, similar to Untamed at Canobie Lake Park.  It was such an amazing experience!

*BIG NEWS:

5L and 5D will be hosting our very own SHARK TANK as part of our Engineering unit.  

This unit requires students to sketch, build, cut and combine items.  If you have any recyclable materials lying around your house...we'd LOVE to have them!  I'm looking for items such as containers, paper, cardboard, water bottles and anything else kids could use to cut, combine and construct.  We will need these by next Wednesday at the latest.

As a culmination of this unit, Mrs. DeLello and I will become "sharks" and will host a simulation of the popular tv show.  You are more than welcome to attend!  Our Shark Tank presentation will be held on Wednesday, February 22nd at 1:20 pm.

*Important Info:

• Father/daughter dance is Friday, February 10th
• Report Cards go home February 3rd
• Band is switching to Tuesdays and Chorus will begin next Friday 
• Chorus sign up sheets went home today
• SHARK TANK: Wednesday, February 22nd at 1:20
