Week 20!

It's hard to fathom that quarter two has come to a close and that we are officially half way through the school year!  As always, the second half of fifth grade seems to pass quicker than first.  Check out some highlights below of our week:

*Math:

  • took our mid year math assessment
  • began our new math unit (adding and subtracting fractions)
  • learned about finding the least common denominator and why that's important
*Literacy:
  • worked on revising our first drafts by including transition words, stronger vocabulary, extending our thinking and rearranging parts that don't make sense
  • worked with our writing partners to investigate the text structure of each paragraph and worked to make sure each was written clearly
  • we will begin publishing our written work next week
  • students will be creating a book that can be printed if you would like a copy! (more details on how to get one next week)

*Social Studies:
  • small groups investigated one of the 13 colonies and taught the class
  • teams were assigned to a specific Roanoke theory and began researching evidence to support their theory
  • teams will participate in a debate next week to defend their theory

*Buddies: We participated in our very first STEM BIN challenge!  Buddies each chose a bin with random materials and were given a challenge...to build a house.  The catch?  They could only use the materials in their bin and each group only had five minutes to do so.  Mrs. Healy and I were so impressed with the creativity, thinking and effort that went into this challenge!

*Mystery Skype: We participated in another Mystery Skype on Friday.  The class was a group of 8th graders from North Dakota!  5L worked so well together, that we were able to guess their location before they guessed ours!

*Social Hour: We had our first of many "Social Hour" talks on Friday.  This one focused on the transition to CMS and worries/thoughts/questions that students had.  Once a month, Mrs. DeLello and I get the students together and talk about middle school, peer pressure, friend issues or other topics that students are worrying/wondering about.

FYI: Report cards will go home Friday, February 3rd

Have a fabulous weekend!
Mrs. Loh
